May 2025 housing construction update to the community
The crane tower at the new student housing construction site
The construction site for the new student housing tower and dining hall got a lot more conspicuous this spring with the installation of a tower crane last month that is visible from the Parkway and many parts of the city. The crane will be a fixture of the city’s landscape as the 10-storey building is constructed over the next couple of years.
People who walk by the construction site, which is at the entrance of VIU’s Student Housing complex, will see more than a large hole in the ground now, as the concrete foundation of the building continues to get poured. Just in one day at the end of March, more than 100 concrete trucks were on site throughout the day!
Once the foundation work is complete, the structure will begin to rise, and the building’s V-shape will become visible. As always, we ask our community to obey all signs and instructions given by construction workers.
Thank you to everyone working so hard to bring this project to life! Once completed, the new student housing tower will increase on-campus housing by nearly 50%, enabling more students to get that successful start at university that an on-campus home fosters.
