Project Overview
The Shq’apthut expansion includes a 242-square-metre addition to both the south and north ends of the building. The expansion provides ceremonial/sacred space, dedicated office space for VIU Elders-in-Residence, an upgrade to existing kitchen amenities to support cultural events and ceremonies, and expanded, accessible washroom facilities. The site surrounding the building will undergo extensive landscape development to support outdoor gatherings and events, and it will exemplify and celebrate Indigenous culture in its design.
Other highlights
- The expansion uses wood and mass-timber elements – a more climate-friendly building technology. VIU is also using its mine water geo-exchange system for heating and cooling, which will reduce GHG emissions and ensure the building is energy efficient.
- This building will be fully accessible and inclusive for all individuals to ensure under-represented groups have opportunity to take part in activities. It will follow the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Guidelines – the highest standard of accessibility – and will be Rick Hansen Accessibility Gold Certified.
- The Gathering Place is next to the planned site of the Aboriginal Head Start Child Care Centre of Reconciliation Excellence, which will offer 75 new child care spaces. The Aboriginal Head Start Association of British Columbia will operate the centre.

Background
Shq'apthut (A Gathering Place) is where cultural, academic, recreational and social activities are promoted and celebrated for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students as well as the wider community.
The building was completed in 2010 and is the primary space used to offer cultural supports to Indigenous students while promoting cultural awareness and events.
Over the years, community members have gathered together at Shq'apthut for a wide variety of events focused on honoring timeless traditions and educating the community.
Indigenous student numbers on the Nanaimo Campus are growing. Additionally, building stronger partnerships with Indigenous communities is one of the six commitments listed in VIU’s new Strategic Plan.
The expansion of Shq’apthut will provide adequate space to support the diverse Indigenous student population and serve as a tangible signal of VIU’s continued commitment to provide culturally responsive campus amenities. Completion of this project will ensure the following:
- All services are provided from a single location, leading to an enhanced, harmonious student experience.
- Additional space provides capacity for expanded educational and cultural experiential learning opportunities.
- Outdoor revitalization ensures traditional ceremonies and events are held on culturally appropriate grounds.
- Sufficient washroom facilities support occupancy, cultural events and future growth.
